Acamprosate is one of the pharmacotherapies, along with naltrexone and disulfiram, used to maintain abstinence in alcohol dependent persons.

Acamprosate is prescriber by medical doctors.

Treatment

Treatment with acamprosate should only be initiated once a person has stopped drinking.

If a person continues to drink whilst being treated with acamprosate they will not experience precipitated withdrawal.

The recommended period of treatment is one year.

Dose varies according to body weight and is taken three times a day with meals.

It should be taken in combination with counselling

Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of acamprosate include:

  • diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • upset stomach
  • itching, skin rash
  • changes in sex drive

Overdose

Overdose on acamprosate is usually benign and the only symptom which was associated with overdose is diarrhoea.
