Pharmacotherapy Training Program for Opioid Dependence (PTPOD)
Southcity Clinic and JUCET (the Joint Centre for Education and Training in General Practice) are currently running the pharmacotherapy training program for opioid dependence incorporating the methadone/buprenorphine prescribers workshop.

Pharmacotherapy Training Program for Opioid Dependence, incorporating the One Day Methadone/Buprenorphine Prescriber Accreditation Workshop

The Pharmacotherapy Training Program for Opioid Dependence aims to provide the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by GPs, to safely and effectively deliver pharmacotherapies for opioid dependence within the Victorian regulatory framework.

The program is comprised of four primary components:

  1. Completion of pre-reading of a Training Manual which includes the Study Guide and Workbook.
  2. Submission of a pre-workshop questionnaire.
  3. Attendance at the one-day Methadone/Buprenorphine Prescriber Accreditation Workshop.
  4. Submission of Department of Human Services, Drugs & Poisons Unit (DPU) questionnaire for Registration as a Methadone and Buprenorphine Prescriber.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Complete an Enrolment Form to enrol for a specific workshop
  • Complete a Registration of Interest form to be placed on the mailing list for notification of future workshop dates

Methaone/buprenorphine workshop

The workshop utilises an interactive learning model. It involves the participation in small group activities and case vignettes throughout the day. Many of the case vignettes provided in the pre-reading will be addressed.

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Drugs, dependence & harm minimisation
  • Treatment Approaches
  • Clinical Assessment of patients using opioids
  • Methadone Maintenance
  • Buprenorphine Maintenance
  • Legal Issues - Permits, regulations and clinical standards

Please note:

  • Participation for the whole program and in the assessment activities is a prerequisite to apply for accreditation as a methadone/buprenorphine prescriber.
  • The Pharmacotherapy Training Program for Opioid Dependence has been approved by the RACGP QA&CPD Program for both group 1 and group 2 points.


This program is funded by the Department of Human Services and is administered by the consortium of Southcity Clinic and JUCET (The Joint Universities Centre for Education and Training in General Practice).
